Class Anthozoa -> Subclass Octocorallia -> Order Alcyonacea -> Suborder Alcyoniina
The defining characteristics of soft corals are their 8-fold symmetry and a body comprised of calcite spicules. 8-fold symmetry means the coral has eight tentacles or tentacles in multiples of eight.

Soft corals are distinguished from other groups of corals by their fleshy bodies that seemingly lack any form of skeleton. The vast majority are good candidates for beginning aquarists. This is because they are more tolerant of higher nutrient systems and do not require strict adherence to chemical parameters such as calcium and alkalinity like stony corals.

The Kenya Tree Leather is a rapidly dividing soft coral that is great for beginners because it is very hardy.  Expect 4"-5" sized corals with multiple branches. Pulsing Xenia is one of the few corals that move so actively on their own.  It is one of the most popular corals in the reef keeping hobby as a result.  Frags of Xenia are usually 1"-2" and have at least 2 stalks. Pink Waving Hand Anthelia is one of the fastest growing corals in the hobby.  It has very long stalks once given proper flow.  You can expect at least a dozen polyps.  Like Xenia, they can be somewhat challenging to ship, but settle in quickly. Green Star Polyps are a great starting coral for beginners.  They grow fast and are hardy.  Frags are roughly 3/4" to 1" in diameter.

The Orange Tip Clove polyps are a fast-growing soft coral that are slightly more uncommon than other variants that have more green in them.  Frags of this coral typically have 6-8 polyps. The Neon Green Nephthea is a great addition to your reef aquarium if you are looking for a fast-growing burst of green.  It is fluoresces intensely.  Frags of this coral are between 1.5" to 2" long. Neon green toadstool leathers are great for beginners because it is very hardy.  Expect a 3" sized cutting.
